A visit to a Naturopathic
Physician is, most likely, different from any other doctor visit you have
had. Our approach to your health is holistic, meaning not only do we want
to know about your current complaint; we want to know as much as we can
about you. Most disease today is not a direct cause and effect event, but
a compilation of many factors (diet, stress, environment, sleep) through
the years. As a result, our first medical consultation with you may be
much more extensive than you are accustomed to undergoing. This initial
intake is critical for our understanding of you and your health. With this
information, we can lay the groundwork for your individualized health plan – restorative
and preventative medicine at its finest.
Initial Interview
The initial intake will entail a thorough discussion of your health history.
We cut down on your in-office time for this interview by sending you
a detailed patient intake form prior to your first appointment. You
can also download the intake form. (It will save you time and money
by having this completed before the first meeting.) The initial interview
can take from 1 to 2 hours depending upon the complexity of your health
complaints. A general physical exam will also be performed, with added
nutritional assessment. If needed to aid in our diagnosis, laboratory
work will be ordered at this time. To conclude, you will be given a
brief treatment plan until the first follow-up appointment. This plan
may include diet changes, homeopathy, herbal or nutritional supplements,
or lifestyle suggestions. If the complaint is an acute problem, i.e.
a cold, flu, tendonitis, etc. we forgo the extensive history and focus
on the complaint at hand. This can usually be done in 45 minutes or
less.
The First Follow-Up
The first follow-up is scheduled for one – two weeks after the
first visit. It is typically a brief visit to assess how you are doing
and to address any questions you may have. It is at this time that Dr.
Kaczor or Dr. Silliman, after gathering your entire laboratory, physical
and historical information, goes over your restorative and preventative
treatment plan. During this visit, the doctor will discuss her findings
and teach you the tools you need to restore and maintain health. You
may also be given a more thorough outline of your treatment plan; this
can include homeopathic medicine, herbal medicine, diet changes, nutritional
supplements etc. This is meant to be an educational visit and questions
are encouraged. We want you to be in control of your health.
Additional
Visits
Depending upon your progress, additional appointments can be from 1 month
to 2 months after the first follow-up (acute cases return much sooner).
These appointments can last from 20 minutes to 60 minutes. Typically,
after 2 – 3 visits, the follow-up appointments are every 4-6
months. Of course these schedules vary depending upon the complexity
of your condition and your response to treatment. Ultimately, our goal
is for you to achieve health and well-being and we want to guide you
there as soon as your body allows.
